Radhika & Sonali

Describe your collection for us.
Ari`el is inspired by the 60’s hippie subculture, and we’ve used denim, made playfully kitsch with batik, tie-dye and various other wash techniques.

Can you tell us what you have on your moodboard as you work on this collection?
The deep sea, cloudy skies, the full moon and the wish flower.

Are there any predominant colours and/or fabrics that you would like to talk about?
There’s a lot of denim.

Who are your favourite designers?
Each season, we are inspired by different designers, artisans, brands and muses. Stella McCartneyMary Katrantzou, Tom Ford are constants, though.

Three style tips that you swear by.
A sense of minimalism, great accessories and good footwear.

What’s a vintage fashion trend you’d like to bring back?
The bell-bottom.

What makes your life fashionable?
Enjoying every experience and deriving something out of it because you feel passionate about the life you have been given

SONALI DHARMAWARDENA

self1

Name : Sonali Dharmawardena

Inspiration for this season’s collection
It stems from my resort collection which had a lot to do with nature.

Describe your mood board
Nudes, shades of blue and a few splashes of colour here and there… similar to the landscape

Your muse
I didn’t have a muse  for this collection

What is the primary trend in this collection?
Easy to wear casuals

The colours & fabrics that have inspired you?
Cottons and silks inspire me

Can you give us three ways to wear your collection?
What is unique about most of them is that they can be worn with flats or sandals as casuals or dressed up with pointy courts for a more smart evening look. Since my collection also includes a few separates they can be mixed and matched

Is there a special thought or message you are trying to communicate with the collection?

What special thought goes behind a seasonal collection?

What makes the Sri Lankan woman so stylish?
I believe that the stylish woman is the one who carves her own sense of style by putting stuff together thereby having an individual sense in fashion. And you do get a few of them.

Who is your style icon?
I love Victoria Beckham, not in the league of design, but as a woman with an individual sense of style and class.
In the local scene I like Annika Fernando, Yehali Sangakkara and Angeline Jolie. All three carry a different sense of style and refreshingly unique.

Beauty look
I think a scrubbed clean look for skin, with good hair, a little bit of lip stick and definitely defining eyes. A stylish pair of footwear and a minimalist approach to clothes, gives that excellent look.

Inspiration for this season’s collection
Nature is what moves me the most & I have been inspired by people who explore it. They like a certain casual chic look that works on the beach or in spas, or even on adventure holidays. My collection brings all of this together to say, “Enjoy your travels, but also have the grace to honour nature.”

What is the primary trend in this collection?
Casual elegance.

The colours & fabrics that have inspired you
Cottons are definitely a big inspiration. I also love a lot of colour – warm, golden shades as well as more natural tones.

Can you give us three ways to wear your collection?
The pieces can really be changed around with accessories quite easily. Jewellery can shift the tempo from casual to dressy. Flat shoes, or sandals keeps the look simple, or you can play it up with heels & a clutch.

What are the key elements of designing a resort collection?
It has to be wearable & have a mix of pieces that are casual & very chic.

What makes the Sri Lankan woman so stylish?
She likes to dress up, which is wonderful. I also see a lot of confidence in her, which adds individuality to her sense of style.
